What you should know about this indicator

  • The UN defines an international migrant as someone who has been living for one year or longer in a country other than the one in which they were born. Similarly an emigrant is someone who has left their country of birth to live in another country for one year or longer.
  • Net migration is calculated by subtracting the number of emigrants from the number of immigrants for each country. Net migration larger than zero means that more people are moving into a country than leaving it, while a negative net migration indicates that more people are leaving the country than moving in.

We compute continental aggregates (Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, South America, Oceania) by summing across constituent countries. We set the world total to zero — every immigrant in one country is an emigrant from another.
