Ratio of same-day trips to tourist trips

What you should know about this indicator

  • A value greater than 1 means more same-day visitors than overnight tourists; a value less than 1 means the opposite.
  • For example, a ratio of 0.5 means there is one same-day visitor for every two overnight tourists.
  • High values are typical for countries with many land borders or those that serve as day-trip destinations from neighboring countries.
Ratio of same-day trips to tourist trips
Same-day trips are those by visitors who arrive and depart within the same day. Tourist trips are those by people who stay overnight. A country with a ratio greater than one has more trips by visitors who leave the same day than those that stay overnight.

UN World Tourism Organization collects data from countries through annual questionnaires that follow the International Recommendations for Tourism Statistics (IRTS 2008) standard, a framework approved by the United Nations. The data covers various aspects of tourism, such as inbound tourism (including arrivals by region, main purpose, and mode of transport, as well as accommodation and tourism expenditure in the country), domestic tourism (including trips and accommodation), outbound tourism (including departures and tourism expenditure in other countries), tourism industries (such as accommodation in hotels and similar establishments), and employment (including the number of employees in tourism industries).
