Sources and processing

World Health Organization – World malaria report 2021

Values for estimated malaria deaths are the point values taken from the World Malaria Report 2021. The regional values are found in the following tables: Africa (Table 3.2), South-East Asia (Table 3.3), Eastern Mediterranean (Table 3.4), Western Pacific (Table 3.5), Americas (Table 3.6) and Europe (Section 3.7).

There is some rounding of the figures for each of the regions, so that the sum doesn't quite add up to the values in the global estimates, which is also rounded. For example their estimate of global malaria deaths is 627000, but the regions sum to 626909.

All data and visualizations on Our World in Data rely on data sourced from one or several original data providers. Preparing this original data involves several processing steps. Depending on the data, this can include standardizing country names and world region definitions, converting units, calculating derived indicators such as per capita measures, as well as adding or adapting metadata such as the name or the description given to an indicator.
