What you should know about this indicator

  • This indicator measures the share of teachers at a given education level who hold at least the minimum academic qualifications required to teach their subjects in their country.
  • "Minimum academic qualifications" refers to subject-matter credentials — university degrees in relevant fields, subject-specific certifications, or equivalent requirements. This focuses on content knowledge rather than pedagogical training.
  • Values below 100% mean some teachers are teaching without the qualifications their country deems necessary. Cross-country comparisons should be made with caution, as requirements vary significantly between nations.
  • Data comes from administrative records collected at schools, typically including information on teacher credentials and employment status.
Share of qualified teachers in pre-primary education

All data and visualizations on Our World in Data rely on data sourced from one or several original data providers. Preparing this original data involves several processing steps. Depending on the data, this can include standardizing country names and world region definitions, converting units, calculating derived indicators such as per capita measures, as well as adding or adapting metadata such as the name or the description given to an indicator.
