What you should know about this indicator

  • UCDP groups countries into five regions by their number in Gleditsch and Ward's list of independent states: Europe (200–399), Africa (400–626), the Middle East (630–699), Asia (700–999) and the Americas (2–199).
  • Egypt (651) is part of the Middle East. The rest of North Africa (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya and Sudan) is part of Africa.
  • UCDP calls its fifth region "Asia". We label it "Asia and Oceania" because it also includes countries such as Australia and Papua New Guinea.

All data and visualizations on Our World in Data rely on data sourced from one or several original data providers. Preparing this original data involves several processing steps. Depending on the data, this can include standardizing country names and world region definitions, converting units, calculating derived indicators such as per capita measures, as well as adding or adapting metadata such as the name or the description given to an indicator.

At the link below you can find a detailed description of the structure of our data pipeline, including links to all the code used to prepare data across Our World in Data.

Notes on our processing step for this indicator

We assign each state in Gleditsch and Ward's list that existed in 1946 or later to its UCDP region. Gleditsch and Ward code 260 is West Germany until 1990 and reunified Germany since, so we assign Germany to Europe.
