What you should know about this indicator
- This indicator shows which country was the largest source of imports for each country–year, based on import values in current US dollars.
- In this data, imports are valued at "cost, insurance, and freight" (CIF). That is the value of the goods plus the cost of shipping and insuring them to the importing country's border. Not every country records its imports this way; for some of those that don't, the IMF adds an estimate of these costs.
- The data covers goods only, not services such as software, tourism, or financial services.
- The ten partners that are the largest source of imports for the most countries are shown by name. All other partners are grouped as "Other".

How we process data at Our World in Data
All data and visualizations on Our World in Data rely on data sourced from one or several original data providers. Preparing this original data involves several processing steps. Depending on the data, this can include standardizing country names and world region definitions, converting units, calculating derived indicators such as per capita measures, as well as adding or adapting metadata such as the name or the description given to an indicator.
At the link below you can find a detailed description of the structure of our data pipeline, including links to all the code used to prepare data across Our World in Data.
Notes on our processing step for this indicator
For each country and year, we identified the partner country with the largest value of imports of goods. We then counted for how many countries each partner was ever the largest source of imports. The ten partners with the highest counts are shown individually, and all others are grouped as "Other".
